How do I begin my personal injury claim?
To protect your interests, it is important to follow a few initial steps after you are injured:
1. Call the police if you are involved in an auto accident.
2. Seek immediate medical attention if necessary.
3. Get as much info from witnesses and those involved in the accident.
4. Take pictures, if a camera is available.
Once you have received medical treatment, the next step is to choose a lawyer and sign a retainer agreement. It is recommended that you get carefully read and fully understand your attorney’s retainer agreement.
While you can change lawyers in the middle of your case, doing will create issues to get past. Terminated lawyers may have the right to a portion of the fee recovery and the opposing insurance company will view your decision to switch lawyers as a sign of weakness. It is much better to make a good choice in lawyers at the outset.
Once you have hired a lawyer, let him or her do their job. Unless your lawyer tells you otherwise, you should discontinue efforts to collect medical records or speak with witnesses. Your lawyer will know what information to collect and which witnesses to speak with. It is important that you be honest with your attorney about every detail about your accident and injury.
If you have been injured, time is of the essence. Do not delay in speaking with an attorney about filing your claim. If you wait too long to file your claim, you may be barred from recovering any damages for your injury.
